The Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Center is for the newly diagnosed breast cancer patient and family members.
Our clinic provides a setting in which a patient, along with family or loved ones, can meet with an expert team of Breast Cancer Specialists who come together for the sole purpose of developing an individualized treatment plan for that patient.
Our Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Care Center team members understand how difficult it is to confront a diagnosis of breast cancer. Our mission is to personalize your treatment and provide you with all the information and support you need during and after your treatment.
Our clinic begins with an information session lasting approximately one hour. You’ll see an informational video which will help you to better understand the disease, and meet members of your care team. Family members or friends are welcome to participate in the first hour. Following this, each patient will consult individually with specialists who will be involved in your care from Surgery, Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Plastic Surgery. These consultations may take 2 hours or more. If you have a large number of loved ones coming with you, you may be asked to choose a representative to be with you during your examinations with our specialists. Other members of your group may want to take advantage of our campus resources, such as the cafeteria, farmers’ market, our Health Education department, or the San Jose public library adjacent to our campus.
During the Visit
While the patients are watching a video providing an overview of breast cancer, the multidisciplinary team meets to discuss each case and determine the best treatment option. Then each specialist, surgeon, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, meets individually with the patient to explain treatment choices and answer questions. A Breast Care Nurse Practitioner organizes the meetings and coordinates subsequent care. Patients are also given a packet of information and will often have a date for surgery at the end of the visit.
