Mental and Behavioral Health
Kaiser Permanente Behavioral Health Education offers behavioral change theory courses to members 18 and older and their families. Below is a list of Behavioral Health Classes, these classes may not be a covered benefit and class fees may apply. Please call the Behavioral Health Department for class availability and information about fees. These classes are open to both Kaiser and community members. Pre-Registration is required for all classes.
Pathways to Emotional Health
Please join us to explore mild to moderate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. This introductory class with provide you with a basic understanding of causes, treatment options, self-care techniques, resources, and next steps. You’ll also learn about follow up care options to help manage your symptoms. Available in Spanish.

Understanding Anxiety Series
In this series, you’ll learn to identify what triggers anxiety for you as well as ways to manage your symptoms. We’ll help you explore your thoughts and learn to approach instead of avoid what you fear. You’ll also learn techniques to relax, reduce your response to triggers, and approach your anxiety with mindfulness.
Suggested prerequisite: Pathways to Emotional Wellness (unless referred by your physician).

Managing Depression Series
Depression is common, real, and treatable. In this series, you will learn about depression as well as ways to manage your symptoms. We will help you learn to challenge negative thoughts and add more pleasant activities to your life. You’ll also learn techniques to relax and approach your life with mindfulness.
Prerequisite: Pathways to Emotional Wellness (unless you are referred by your practitioner).

Understanding Mental Health: An Overview for Families and Caregivers
This class provides a brief overview of mental illness, mental health, and resources available in the community to support families and caregivers. This is an opportunity to ask questions and get support. Guest speakers from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will make presentations.

Improving Your Sleep Series
Want to fall asleep quicker, sleep sounder, and awaken feeling more refreshed? Improve the quantity and the quality of your sleep. Learn how nighttime habits and thinking patterns affect your sleep, and how to change both. This class does not address medical conditions that interfere with sleep.

Health Journeys: Guided Imagery Programs
Guided imagery is a type of relaxation exercise designed to engage your mind, body, and spirit. These podcasts, available at kpdoc.org/podcasts, can help you ease pain, relieve stress, get healthful sleep, and prepare for surgery.
Managing your Stress
A four-week class that teaches participants how to develop awareness of mind-body interaction. Participants learn about choices in creating and maintaining wellness by fighting fatigue and frustration, managing stress and symptoms, improving communication, and increasing their ability to participate in enjoyable activities.

Couples Communication Series
A four-week class designed for couples to improve their communication skills. Couples will be introduced to the following topics: verbal and non-verbal communication, listening and validation skills, anger management and conflict resolution, and problem-solving techniques. For this course, both members of the Couple must attend all sessions. This is not a class for separating/divorcing couples. It is a skills-based communication class for partners who want to be with each other. This class is educational in nature and it’s not couples counseling or therapy. One person in the relationship must be a Kaiser member and non-Kaiser partner should call Member Services at 1-800-464-4000 to request a temporary medical record number to get enrolled in the class. Couples Communication is not designed for couples:
- Where only one person is willing to attend
- One or both have untreated substance use
- One or both have untreated serious psychiatric problem
- There is intimate partner violence in the relationship
- One or both are unable to benefit from the class process (for example, high levels of defensiveness, verbal abuse or blaming)

Assertiveness Series
In this four-week course, participants will be provided with an opportunity to explore their styles of communication and the barriers to assertiveness; the differences between assertiveness and aggressiveness; and tools to practice assertiveness communication skills with interactive class exercises. A recommended textbook is, Your Perfect Right.

A four-week class that teaches participants skills such as trigger awareness, escalation control, stress reduction, assertiveness, healthy self-talk, and response choice. A recommended textbook is, When Anger Hurts. One member per household per family within a series.

Postpartum Emotional Health Series
Feeling blue or stressed following pregnancy is common and does not create serious problems. However, symptoms that include constant worry and anxiety, low mood and fatigue, low self-esteem, guilt, changes in sleeping and eating, and/or feelings of isolation may be related to depression and anxiety. If you are a parent experiencing any of these symptoms, please join us for this 8-week Postpartum Emotional Health Class.

Parenting child with ADHD
Three individual classes for parents of children with ADHD.
Class 1: Parenting the Child with ADHD Overview provides the history and variations of ADHD, provides information about medications from a medical professional, and explores resources.
Class 2: Parenting Skills in the Home introduces positive parenting, building self-esteem, rewards and consequences, family relationships, and parent support resources.
Class 3: School Skills and Accommodations for Parenting the Child with ADHD introduces “succeeding” at school, teacher/educator communications, parent’s rights, and use of community resources.

Forgiveness
A Path to Freedom Online Series, just like the in-person class, is about learning helpful techniques in finding happiness and forgiveness to oneself and others. In this 2-class series, participants will have the opportunity to engage in various exercises, and discover tips on how to practice kindness, self-compassion, and gratitude.

Manejando su Estres – Spanish Stress Management Class
En este curso de 4 semanas, el programa de “Manejar el Estrés,” usted aprenderá cómo incrementar la conexión entre su cuerpo y su mente para sentir tranquilidad usando técnicas de respiración, movimientos físicas y ejercicios de meditación sencillos. Igualmente aprenderá cómo cambiar su estilo de comunicación y cambiar sus pensamientos negativos que contribuye a la ansiedad y depresión. También revisaremos como mantener sus ganancias.

Adult ADHD
This four-session class introduces you to a basic understanding of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults, coping with the disorder and resources. Participants will become knowledgeable about; the symptoms of ADHD; will learn to manage negative aspects of impulsivity and related behaviors such as anger; how ADHD impacts relationships and self-esteem; time management skills; self-care; and planning for the future. The goal of the class is to learn how to change behaviors to effectively manage your responses to the challenges of ADHD.
