Genetic Evaluation for Adults

During your genetic evaluation the genetics provider may:

Ask you detailed questions about your medical and family history, on both sides of your family.
Ask you to complete a questionnaire prior to your visit. The Hypermobility patient questionnaire can be obtained here [CLICK TO OPEN] OR your genetics provider’s office may also send you a message through kp.org. Please download a copy of the form by selecting download or the ‘down arrow’ symbol. Save the form to your computer. Open the file and complete the form. Save changes. Through kp.org, please reply to your provider’s message with an attachment of the form. You can attach the form by clicking ‘Attach’ below your message. If you are unable to send the form online, please bring a copy to your appointment.
Perform a physical examination, if needed
Determine if any genetic testing is needed
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of testing, and how you will get your results.
Make sure you have enough information about testing to make a well-informed decision
Address your questions and concerns

Genetic Testing

If the genetics provider orders a genetic test for you this is usually done on a small sample of blood or body tissue. If one of your close relatives already had a genetic test for the same disorder it is very helpful to bring a copy of that lab report to your genetics visit. The time it takes to get results varies depending on the test. Your genetic provider will contact you with your results

Follow-up

After the visit, the genetic provider may contact you to:

Discuss test results
Answer any additional questions
Identify any further needs
Make referrals to other health care professionals, if needed
Recommend a follow-up appointment with Genetics, if needed
