Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Hospital Named a Comprehensive Stroke Center

We are only one of 98 medical centers to achieve this distinction in the United States. The Joint Commission sets a high bar for clinical and organizational excellence in stroke care. Comprehensive stroke certification requirements include advanced imaging technology, well coordinated post hospital care, dedicated Neuro intensive care (ICU) beds for stroke patients, peer review processes, administration of stroke specific medications, and participation in stroke research.

Most importantly, this prestigious certification is a significant reminder of the excellent life-saving care this level of can provide. A patient, Sonia Bains, shares her story of how she started having seizures and losing coordination about two weeks after giving birth which led to a complex stroke. She credits her treatment and care at the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Comprehensive Stroke Center for saving her life. See the photos and read the article.

New research about stroke care

Dr. Alexander Flint, Neuroscience, at the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center, is quoted and cited in the Wall Street Journal online “HeartBeat” column written by Ron Winslow. The article, below, talks about Dr. Flint’s research that showed that stroke patients who receive statins immediately or continuously upon admission to the hospital had a significantly higher rate of survival and/or a faster return home. Aside from Dr. Flint’s research, the Wall Street Journal article below cites the growth of accredited primary stroke centers and emergency department improvements for the national decrease in stroke fatalities.
