Caring for Your Newborn

Well Baby Nursery

Most babies stay with mom to support bonding and breastfeeding.  A nurses will take your newborn briefly to our Well Baby Nursery to receive a newborn hearing screening to ensure that your baby has normal hearing. The nurses will also take your baby here for a state-required California Newborn Screening blood test to detect rare metabolic disorders. If you choose to have your son circumcised, he will also go to the Well Baby Nursery for the procedure.

Special Care Nursery

Our Special Care Nursery a is for babies needing extra attention and is located next to the Well Baby Nursery. Visitors are allowed for a pediatric patient and the Special Care Nursery in our Redwood City Hospital offers a service called NIC-Unite. It uses iPads that parents and family can use to see their baby remotely in the nursery. Due to the pandemic, it is difficult for loved ones, relatives, and families to see their newborn and even more so if the baby has to have hospital care. This allows them to be a little more in touch with their newborn. We offer Neonatal Intensive Care Service units (NICU) at other nearby medical centers to care for babies born earlier than 34 weeks.
