ASD and PFO Treatment Options

ATRIAL SEPTAL DEFECT (ASD)

Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers (atria) of the heart and is often a congenital heart defect, meaning that the hole is present at birth. ASD’s come in different shapes and sizes. Some can be monitored with careful surveillance and others require specific treatment.

If treatment is necessary, our Structural Heart Team will guide you to the appropriate therapy that might include minimally invasive transcatheter treatment or consideration for cardiac surgery.

This procedure requires you to come to the hospital fasting and will require a stay in the hospital. You will need a driver to take you home after your recovery is complete.

PATENT FORAMEN OVALE (PFO)

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a small hole in the heart that did not close completely after birth. It is quite common and affects about 1 in 4 people, most of whom never know they have the condition because it rarely causes problems.

PFO’s often do not cause symptoms and rarely require treatment. It may be incidentally discovered during tests you receive for other health problems. If treatment is necessary, our Structural Heart Team will guide you to the appropriate therapy with might include minimally invasive transcatheter treatment.

This procedure requires you to come to the hospital fasting and will require a stay in the hospital. You will need a driver to take you home after your recovery is complete.
