Procedures at MarinHealth

As Kaiser Permanente’s San Rafael Medical Center surgical facilities continue to be upgraded, Kaiser Permanente has developed a close working relationship with MarinHealth to provide space for some surgeries while the infrastructure project is in progress. Kaiser Permanente providers will continue to perform the surgeries and care for our members, while using MarinHealth facilities and teams.

Phone calls and appointments to expect:

  • An appointment to meet with the preoperative medicine team will occur prior to your surgery. This might be in the form of a phone call, video or in-person appointment.  Your surgeon will provide instructions as of which appointment type is best for your specific situation
  • You will be instructed by our preoperative medicine team about the need to get laboratory tests or further workup prior to your surgery
  • A COVID test is needed in most cases and an appointment will be scheduled to get this done 4 days prior to your surgery date. In some special cases, your surgeon may determine this is not needed.

It’s very important that you don’t miss this appointment.  Your surgery could be postponed if the test is not done in time.

  • 5–7 days before surgery, you will receive a call from the billing office to discuss your co-pay.
  • 1-3 days prior to your surgery you will receive a secure message through KP.org with instructions and confirmation of your arrival time at MarinHealth

Preparing for your procedure

Our teams are here to help you feel at ease as you prepare for your surgery at MarinHealth. We want you to have all the information you need to understand what to expect before and after your surgery, along with how to prepare for the day of your surgery.

  • You may learn more about your surgery with the “Prepare for Your Procedure (EMMI)” program. This short video will provide you with a clear sense of what to expect before, during and after your procedure. The program can be viewed at home, a Kaiser Permanente Health Education Center, or anywhere with internet access:

Prepare for Your Procedure (EMMI)  Please note: Not every procedure will be listed

After surgery

Your surgeon will send you home with discharge instructions that will guide you on the things you should and shouldn’t do after surgery, as well as to know what is normal and expected and might be concerning requiring you to reach out to your care team.

After surgery, you may have questions for your care team. Even though your surgery will take place at MarinHealth, all aftercare, including emergency care, should be done at Kaiser Permanente.

When to call us:

  • For non-urgent issues: Secure message your surgeon.
  • For a response same day/next day: Call your surgeon’s office to talk to an advice nurse.
  • For immediate concerns: Call the advice line at 1-866-454-8855.
  • In an emergency, go to your nearest Kaiser Permanente Emergency Department.

Your skilled Kaiser Permanente and MarinHealth team of physicians, nurses, and support staff is looking forward to providing you with personalized and compassionate care throughout your visit and during your recovery. If you have any questions, please reach out to your care team.
