Our Genetic Counselors

Rachel Peralta, MS, LCGC

My Background

I was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. Growing up in an area surrounded by nature made me eager to explore and learn. Early on, I developed a love for science and investigation. From the moment I learned about genetics, I was fascinated. How could our genes explain all of the variation that we see between people? I wanted to be a genetics detective, and decided I would learn as much as I could about biology.

Education & Experience

I went to the University of Washington and got my Bachelor of Science degree in biology. After I graduated, I decided I wanted to work in a laboratory that studied the genetics of microorganisms to get more genetics experience before deciding on a career path. I was torn between my love of genetics in the lab, but also wanting the opportunity to see patients. I eventually realized that genetic counseling was the perfect combination of genetics and patient care. I decided to move to California for graduate school, and I got my master of science in genetic counseling from the University of California, Irvine.

I am a licensed and board-certified genetic counselor and a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors. I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2015.

About My Practice

I practice genetic counseling in three main areas - cancer, prenatal and pediatrics. I love having the ability to speak with a variety of patients and families that are all at different stages in their lives. I particularly enjoy working in the pediatric setting. I enjoy teaching my patients about how genetics might impact their lives, and always make an effort to figure out how best to deliver the information. My goal is for you to leave our visit and be able to truly understand our discussion. Being a genetic counselor at Kaiser Permanente means that I have the opportunity to work closely with the other members of your care team - be it a pediatrician, obstetrician or oncologist. By working as a team, we are able to give you the best attention and care possible.

How I Thrive

I thrive by being as active as possible. I snowboard (if the weather allows!) and do CrossFit and Olympic weightlifting. I love to go to Disneyland with my husband to walk around, go on rides, and of course, have an occasional treat!
