Our Genetic Counselors

Amy Poole, MS, LCGC

My Background

I grew up in San Diego County, California.

Education & Experience

I first fell in love with biology and genetics in high school. When I entered UCLA, I knew right away that I wanted a degree that focused on cells, genes and DNA, and I ended up choosing a major in microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics.  It was during my time at UCLA that I was introduced to genetic counseling by a guest lecturer in one of my courses. After hearing her description of the profession and its role in the ever-changing landscape of genetics, I had a deep desire to learn more about becoming a genetic counselor. I came to find out that genetic counseling was a perfect fit for my love of science and genetics, but it also would allow me to interact with and help individuals navigate genetic risk and testing. I completed my undergraduate training at UCLA.

To begin my journey of becoming a genetic counselor, I moved half way across the country to attend the genetic counseling master program at the University of Texas, Health Sciences Center in Houston. My time in Texas was spent training at UT, Baylor, Texas Children’s and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Graduation came quickly and in May 2010 I graduated with my master’s in science.

While I loved my time in Texas, I knew I wanted to come back home to Southern California. I was extremely lucky to begin my time with Kaiser Permanente’s genetics team in June 2010 and I have been a happy member of the team ever since.

I became board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and obtained licensure from the State of California in 2011. I am affiliated with the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and act as a volunteer committee member on NSGC’s Membership Committee.

About My Practice

A Kaiser Permanente Orange County, I counsel individuals for hereditary cancer risk, adult onset genetic conditions, during pregnancy and in our pediatric genetics clinic. I also run a specialty multi-disciplinary clinic that focuses on integrating care for individuals and families with hereditary gastrointestinal cancers. It is through this work that I am able to help individuals and families who may be facing complex genetic conditions. By identifying individuals with genetic conditions or hereditary risks for disease, our Kaiser Permanente team can better care for each individual by tailoring screening and management for their condition(s). My favorite thing about my job is being someone my patients can go to with questions and concerns about their own risk for hereditary conditions.

How I Thrive

I love to run and play with my favorite furry companion (my dog) down at the beach. I like to cook and am always trying out new recipes I find on Pinterest.
