One of the largest employers
With over 5,300 physicians and employees, Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento is one of the largest employers in the area.
Largest local health care provider
Kaiser Permanente is the largest not-for-profit health care provider in the south area. More than 233,000 members—or 56% of south area’s commercially-insured population—receive their care at our South Sacramento Medical Center and two medical office buildings in Elk Grove.
High-tech, high-touch care
In addition to a wide variety of emergency, inpatient and outpatient medical services, our medical center offers a number of high-tech specialty services, including the south area’s only and Kaiser Permanente’s first Level II Trauma Center, thoracic surgery, a bariatric surgery program, certified stroke center, comprehensive community cancer program (accredited by the Commission on Cancer), robotic surgery program, cardiac cath lab, interventional radiology, a cochlear implant program, neurosurgery, head and neck surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and an elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) program.
5th Busiest Emergency Department in California
Our South Sacramento Emergency Department—which is open to all, regardless of ability to pay—is the fifth busiest in California, according to the latest numbers available from the California Health and Human Services Agency. It is currently undergoing a major expansion project that will double the amount of treatment bays when completed in 2024.
Growing with the community
To better meet the needs of our members and the communities we serve, we completed a $350 million expansion project in late 2011. The expansion included a new five-story hospital tower, an expanded ED and trauma unit, additional operating room capacity, a helistop for quick helicopter access, and additional outpatient space on our South Sacramento Medical Center campus. The expansion included the November 2011 opening of our second medical office building in Elk Grove—the Elk Grove Promenade Medical Offices. A 24 med-surg bed unit opened on the second floor of our South Tower in May 2019.
Life-saving care
Our Level II Trauma Center, which opened in 2009, is the south area’s first and only trauma center. The center is staffed 24/7 with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals who have special training in treating critical injuries to the head, spine, and vital organs. Our ER physicians have trained at Level I trauma centers, as have other specialists, including neurosurgeons; general surgeons; neurointerventionalists; neuro-radiologists; orthopedic surgeons; oral and ear-nose-throat specialists; plastic surgeons; and anesthesiologists.
Motor vehicle collisions accounted for 38% of the trauma cases treated at our Trauma Center, while falls accounted for 34% and violence 12%. Our Trauma Prevention Program is dedicated to the promotion of healthy behaviors and the prevention of injury and death through education and outreach to the community.
Home to healthy starts
More than 2,800 babies get their life’s start each year at our medical center. Spacious private labor rooms—some with birthing tubs—offer new moms, their babies, and family a comforting, family-centered maternity experience. A dedicated team of board-certified lactation consultants and a Newborn Care Center help parents get off to a healthy start.
Sports medicine fit for a King
Our team of experienced sports medicine physicians—who also serve as the team physicians for the Sacramento Kings—provide personalized evaluation, treatment, and prevention of sports- and exercise-related injuries at our Sports Medicine Centers inside the Golden 1 Center downtown and Elk Grove Promenade Medical Offices. Opened in 2011, our 4,000-square–foot Sports Medicine Center in Elk Grove features the latest advances in treatment and technology. It includes a spacious rehabilitation gym full of cardiovascular, strength training, and physical therapy equipment to help accelerate recovery. A 40-meter outdoor track is also used for evaluation and rehabilitation, and an onsite Healthy Living Store.
In the community
In 2021, our medical center and health plan provided $92.5 million in community benefit. Through our local grants program, we also support, strengthen and enhance programs and organizations that address the health needs of our most vulnerable residents.
