Welcome to the Infectious Disease department

The Infectious Disease Service at Santa Clara is dedicated to ensuring the safety of our patients in both preventing and managing infections. We perform active surveillance in the hospital and monitor for appropriate antibiotic use. We have several services designed especially to accommodate the needs of our patients including a Travel Medicine Clinic an HIV/AIDS clinic to manage the complexities of this disease and a consult service for all physicians to help identify and diagnose patients with communicable diseases.

Education

The IC Department offers education to physicians, staff, patients and visitors. Topics range from AIDS to Zoster. The format can be written, one-on-one, small group or a class format. Staff may request education, it can be a spur-of-the moment question or a scheduled educational session.

Surveillance

The IC Department conducts targeted surveillance on specified surgical site infections and epidemiological important organisms. Compliance to Department policies and procedures is monitored. Feedback from surveillance and monitoring is given to chiefs and managers so appropriate action can be taken.

Consultation

The IC Department members sit on various Medical Center committees to assure IC activities are integrated with Medical Center activities.

The Infection Control Program manages the following scope of practice:

  • Tracking and trending critical data and information
  • Setting and recommending policies and procedures
  • Compliance with regulations, guidelines and accreditation requirements
  • Intervening directly to prevent transmission of infectious diseases
  • Education and training of healthcare workers
