INTRODUCTION TO THE TREATMENT PROCESS AT AMRS
Here at AMRS, we follow the World Health Organization definition of alcoholism and drug dependency as “a brain disorder with social and psychological components.” Our abstinence-based program is organized around the central goal of helping our members lead lives free of mood-altering chemicals. In our harm-reduction and educational programs, we support our members who may not be looking for complete abstinence from all substances, but who are hoping to take steps towards healthy changes to support their overall quality of life.
While medicine continues to make strides in improving biological support for recovery, Chemical Dependency Treatment remains primarily a psychosocial process. A process which rests on:
- Structure
- Community
- Time
Our program seeks to provide a structured, predictable and safe environment for the member to discover how chemical use has affected and distorted his or her life. Our goal is to be warm and welcoming and to reinforce the idea that our members are joining a new world composed of people who are struggling with similar substance use problems. Research has made it clear that the longer someone can stay in the structured community of recovering individuals, the more likely that they will be able to maintain their recovery.
* Please note that our program requires in person attendance at certain visit types and for urine drug screens.
