The Department of Anesthesiology consists of two primary areas of focus. The first is the Preoperative Clinic (POC), which is staffed with nurse practitioners, registered nurses, medical assistants, and unit assistants. The POC staff gathers health-related information to determine patients’ readiness for surgery and prepares patients for their surgical experience as much as possible. A mind/body relaxation program called “Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster” is offered to help reduce anxiety and accelerate the healing process.
The second area of focus involves operations or procedures in various venues — the main operating rooms and ambulatory center at Kaiser Santa Clara, the Labor and Delivery ward, and inpatient areas in the main hospital. Here anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA’s) care for patients during surgery and other procedures, using the latest technology and medical knowledge to relieve patients’ pain and anxiety.
