What is Lifestyle Medicine?
Lifestyle Medicine is the therapeutic use of evidence-based lifestyle interventions to treat and prevent diseases. It empowers individuals with the knowledge and life skills to make effective behavior changes that address the underlying causes of disease.
In our daily work we seek to inspire people, inform choices, and improve health. That is why we offer a range of programs and services to promote optimal health.
There are six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine.
Food is medicine. Choose predominantly whole, plant-based foods that are rich in fiber and nutrient dense. Vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Learn more about food for health recipes or sign up for one of our available classes. See a plant-based cooking demo and nutrition.
Regular and consistent physical activity that can be maintained on a daily basis throughout life-walking, gardening, push ups and lunges – is an essential piece of the optimal health equation. Learn how exercise is linked to mental health or sign up for one of our available classes. Find physical activity online tips.
Stress can lead to improved health and productivity – or it can lead to anxiety, depression, obesity, immune dysfunction and more. Helping patients recognize negative stress responses, identify coping mechanisms and reduction techniques leads to improved wellbeing. Learn more about mental health and wellness or sign up for one of our available classes.
The well-documented dangers of any addictive substance use can increase risk for many cancers and heart disease. Positive behaviors that improve health include cessation of tobacco use and limiting the intake of alcohol. Learn more addiction and recovery or sign up for one of our available classes.
Lack of, or poor quality sleep can lead to a strained immune system. Identify dietary, environmental, and coping behaviors to improve sleep health. Learn more how to improve your sleep or sign up for one of our available classes.
Social connectedness is essential to emotional resiliency. Studies show that isolation is associated with increased mortality.
