Comprehensive Stroke Center

Our Mission

The mission of the Kaiser Permanente Sacramento Comprehensive Stroke Center is to meet the needs of our patients and our community by being the leader in the provision of high-quality, state-of-the-art, cost-effective prevention and treatment of stroke. We are dedicated to providing patients with a multidisciplinary approach to Stroke care with staff who are passionate about caring for stroke patients. The Comprehensive Stroke Center will foster the professional development of our individual employees and care providers.

At Kaiser Permanente Greater Sacramento area facilities (South Sacramento, Sacramento, Roseville), we have the capacity to meet the needs of stroke survivors with state-of-the-art complex stroke care 24/7. The neuroscience program based at our Sacramento location has achieved the prestigious Comprehensive Stroke Center designation by the Joint Commission. Here we have the infrastructure, expertise, and technology to treat stroke patients who require complex medical, interventional, and surgical care.

Stroke is a significant health care issue, affecting 800,000 people every year and killing one person every four minutes. Stroke frequency and complexity will only increase with the aging population. Advanced treatment and specialized care of the more challenging cases are available at a limited number of hospitals. Because of the unique structure of Kaiser Permanente, we have the services available that focus on a multi-disciplinary and integrated approach. Our clinicians in Sacramento have the expertise in neurosurgery and vascular neurosciences to treat this population. We have the capability to offer MRI, MR angiography, and CT angiography. We specialize in surgical and endovascular techniques such as clipping and coiling of intracranial aneurysms, carotid endarterectomy, carotid angioplasty/stenting, and intra-arterial treatment of acute stroke.

Our Sacramento Neuroscience program has advanced capabilities:

  • Offering the highest level of comprehensive stroke care
  • Providing full-spectrum, multi-disciplinary care to these seriously ill patients
  • Delivering cutting-edge interventions in the treatment of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes
  • Providing enhanced long-term care management

While all Kaiser Permanente Northern Calfornia medical centers are certified Primary Stroke Centers, our Sacramento Medical Center has earned the prestigious Comprehensive Stroke Center designation by The Joint Commission, a national not-for-profit that accredits health care organizations and programs in the U.S. for achieving high-performance standards. To earn this distinction, a facility must provide advanced imaging technology, well-coordinated post-hospital care, dedicated Neurointensive care (ICU) beds for stroke patients, peer review processes that address patients with ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, administration of stroke-specific medications, and participation in stroke research.

The highest level of complex care for stroke and neurological conditions is also provided at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center.  Learn more about those services.
