About Our Services
The East Bay Adult Mental Health team is comprised of social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, nurses and psychiatrists with diverse clinical knowledge who are dedicated to serving the general mental health needs of the adults in the community.
We provide an array of services including assessment, treatment planning, individual and group psychotherapy, clinical case management, and crisis management.
We follow a model of care that weaves group and individual psychotherapy with behavior health classes, medication management, case management, and/or other specialty services to provide the quality of care that our members seek.
Individual psychotherapy in the department is anchored in a Cognitive Based–Solution Oriented approach which has been supported in the literature for proven effectiveness.
- Treatment involves a problem solving approach to help patients develop the necessary changes in their behavior, thoughts, and feelings to improve their coping abilities for mental and emotional distress.
- The interventions also tend to focus on the here and now and involves an active collaboration between the patient and the therapist.
- The individual treatment approach works in conjunction with our group and class program and medication management program to offer our patients diverse treatment options for their mental health needs.
Our research has shown that patients receiving group psychotherapy have 25% better outcomes than those patients who do not attend. This is a significant outcome and therefore we are committed to continually expanding and improving our class and group treatment program.
- We have worked hard to expand and improve our treatment programs so that most patients’ needs can be addressed by one or more of our groups.
- Our groups are designed for easy accessibility, with many classes and groups offered in the evenings. As a result, we have a high rate of utilization for our groups and classes.
- An appointment with a therapist/psychiatrist on the adult team is typically the first point of contact for adult patients.
- Patients can self-refer for an intake appointment, or can be referred by other providers in the medical center.
- All patients that meet medical necessity are provided with an intake appointment where they meet with one of our clinicians. During this appointment the clinician works collaboratively with the patient to determine a treatment plan that will effectively address the patient’s needs.
- Recommended treatment plans may include a combination of specialized group psychotherapy, individual psychotherapy, medication evaluation and management, Behavioral Health Education classes, referrals to specialized services within the department (e.g., intensive outpatient program, clinical case management, eating disorders or chemical dependency services), and/or community resources.
Clinical Case Management Services provide ongoing care for patients who need more intensive individual, family treatment and case management, due to the severity and chronicity of their conditions. The family treatment is provided either with the patient, or through the Family Education and Support Group.
The patients followed by this team are typically diagnosed with Psychotic Spectrum Disorders, and Bipolar 1 Disorder.
Individuals referred to the CCM Team should meet criteria for medical necessity, as evidenced by level of severity, e.g. experiencing on-going psychosis secondary to schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder, mania, and serious symptoms impacting current level of functioning in the areas of socialization, occupation, and education.
Many of the CCM appointments are task oriented, e.g. linking patients to community resources, arranging collateral contacts with family members or care providers, coordination of clinic treatment modalities including referrals to classes, groups, the CCM group, the Young Adult CCM Group, the Life Skills Group, and medication appointments.
The CCM clinicians are also available to provide consultation about community resources to Adult Service staff.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) serves patients who have been identified as needing a higher level of care in an outpatient setting.
Many of the patients served in the Intensive Outpatient Program are referred by hospitals, crisis residential settings or partial hospital programs.
Referrals made to the program from the clinic are prioritized by acuity, i.e., if there is a clinical indication for a higher level of care based upon a patient’s report of suicidal or homicidal ideation, plan or intent, or concerns that a patient may be declining in their ability to provide for themselves.
The program currently meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Patients engaged in this treatment program begin to learn Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and relaxation skills, and receive group psychotherapy, medication management, and individual appointments.
