We’re taking necessary precautions to keep our patients and employees safe and we ask you to follow these mandatory rules during the COVID-19 pandemic:
- A COVID-19 test at a Kaiser Permanente Medical Center may be required (we will let you know if needed) prior to your scheduled Overnight Sleep Study.
- Please contact us if you or someone in the same household has tested positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of your sleep study.
Preparing for the Study
- Wash your body and hair but do not use any moisturizers, conditioners, hair styling products, makeup, moisturizing cream or lotions. Remove toupees, weaves, braids and wigs. It is very important that your hair and skin are clean the day of your study to properly attach the sensors. These sensors will be applied directly to your body and scalp with a thick paste.
- Men should shave before arriving. If you have a beard, shave the bare areas of your face. Mustache, goatees and beards are acceptable.
- One fingernail must be free of nail polish, acrylic, gel and shellac.
- Make sure you have dinner prior to arriving to the sleep lab. No food is available in the lab and set up will begin immediately upon arrival. You will not be permitted to leave the building after checked in.
- Please refrain from taking naps and avoid any physical exercise that you normally don’t do the day of the study.
- Refrain from consuming alcoholic or caffeinated beverages as well and do not use cannabis a minimum of six hours prior to your study.
- No smoking is permitted on Kaiser Permanente campus.
What to Bring and Expect During the Study
- Please bring and take your regular medication in the original bottle as prescribed by your doctor, unless directed otherwise. Please inform your sleep technician before taking any medications that evening. We do not distribute any medications in the lab. Diabetics, please bring your glucometer and insulin with you as we do not provide these items in the lab.
- No refrigeration is available on site for patient use. You must bring your own ice chest/cooler if needed for items such as breast milk, insulin etc.
- Two-piece loose fitting sleeping attire, slippers or flip flops, toothbrush and toothpaste.
- A book, tablet or DVD. Rooms are equipped with a TV, DVD player and WIFI. Sorry no cable.
- The study will include audio and video taping. This is needed for the physician to better evaluate the study.
- The set up and applying sensors for your study could take up to 60-90 minutes.
- Once the study begins, personal electronics will need to be turned off until the study concludes.
- The study will be approximately 9-10 hours long. Your Sleep Technician will wake you up around 5:00am to remove all sensors. You are free to leave before 6:00am as the Sleep Lab closes.
- You will not be permitted to leave the building after checked in.
What to Expect after your Sleep Study
- The sensors applied to your scalp/hair may leave behind residue. We recommend cleaning with warm water. Allow the water to rinse your scalp and body a few minutes before shampooing. This will help soften the paste and make it easier to wash out.
- Some patients may experience skin irritation from the removal of the sensors. If this occurs, keep the area clean and dry. Let your doctor know if it doesn’t go away after several days.
- A Physician specializing in Sleep Medicine will interpret your study. Anticipate a phone call or secured message, within approximately 7-14 business days to review your results.
