Percutaneous Mitral Valve Repair

Percutaneous Mitral Valve Repair is a minimally invasive procedure to repair an incompetent mitral valve without stopping the heart. When the mitral valve has a significant leak, most patients experience symptoms of shortness of breath. This leads their cardiologist to refer their patient to a heart surgeon for repair or replacement. If the patient to too ill for open heart surgery, they may be referred to us for percutaneous repair. There are multiple causes of Mitral Regurgitation, not all of which can be repaired percutaneously.

In percutaneous mitral valve repair, the physician uses a catheter to thread a plastic tube up to the heart through a blood vessel which allows the positioning of a device to treat the leaky part of the valve.

The Structural Heart team performs a comprehensive evaluation of each patient to determine if you would benefit from a percutaneous mitral valve repair. A Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) is often required to help us evaluate the anatomy of your valve leaflets prior to consideration of mitral valve repair.

This procedure requires you to come to the hospital fasting and will require a stay in the hospital. You will need a driver to take you home after your recovery is complete.
